Tim Ayler and Brandon Cook presented at the 2014 Indiana Green Expo at the Indiana Convention Center on Thursday, January 9th. The conference included companies from the green industry, including turf, irrigation and landscape companies, as well as golf courses and other businesses. The title of the presentation was Pay Attention! Overlooked Tax Breaks and Accounting Mistakes. Please click here to read about some of the topics discussed.

Tim Ayler began the presentation by discussing some of the actions that create cash flow challenges within companies. The topics included billing and collection practices, hiring practices in a cyclical business, overhead, uncontrolled growth and financing long term assets with long term debt. The second category discussed was managing information, which included topics such as trend analysis, budgeting and cash forecasting, as well as tracking key performance indicators. Tim wrapped up by discussing some common financial statement mistakes and the lack of oversight by management over the accounting function.

Brandon Cook transitioned the presentation to tax topics. He provided an overview of the new capitalization policies that were made into federal tax law in the fourth quarter and the policies that all companies need to have in place effective January 1, 2014. He also spoke about like-kind exchanges for business property and equipment, the expiration of bonus depreciation and the major reduction of the Section 179 limits for 2014, and other various tax deductions and tax credits.
